Jennifer Abubakar Abena – Educator and Fighter

samwellaOn the outskirts of a small village is a brand new building. This brick built structure will contain enough desks, books and supplies for at least 60 children. The building was finished recently and was given by kind donation by Jennifer Abubakar Abena, 28. Jennifer is a local hero in her region and has worked extremely hard to raise funds to help improve local living standards.

Her father, Magudo, 52, runs the marketing and administration part of the charity that Jennifer set up. Thus far, their target of $10,000 has been far exceeded and, a new drive to raise awareness is already bringing them closer to their new target of $15,000.

“I want to reduce the level of corruption that our local community as to undergo. The police take bribes, there are gangs and inter-community warfare, it is time we put an end to this. I set up the charity to help the local people to have access to clean drinking water and the little school at the edge of the village will give access for every child to have an education.”

These were the words of Jennifer, in a recent interview. We spoke to her about her work and determination to help locals out of the poverty and slum-like villages and into better facilities to promote health and wellbeing. Jennifer is undeterred by the threat of gang warfare and local corruption. She told us that is does frighten her but her work is more important. She intends to help stamp out the illegal subversion in the area and educate people to live on the right side of the law. She also wants people to become more involved in their local community and help build a structured society in the region.
